Your complexion is a reflection of your diet

The perfect facial cleansing and care routine is a recurring topic for magazines and manufacturers. And of course, good, gentle cleansing to remove make-up, make-up residue and everyday dirt is undisputedly essential. And as we get older, we become increasingly concerned with the right care, the right application and the right choice of products, especially when a new wrinkle appears.

The skin becomes more sensitive with age

The skin becomes more sensitive with age and reacts more sensitively to the wrong care products or possible “over-care”. This is becausetoo much well-intentioned facial care can also damage the usually sensitive facial skin. But what does good or right actually mean in this context and how can you optimally support healthy skin in its functions? Here are our top 4:

  •  Rethink your diet

It sounds so trivial and yet it is so important: avoid dehydration and drink enough every day, because moisture is essential for the skin. Too little moisture causes the skin to dry out, resulting in the formation of unwanted small dryness wrinkles, which remain in the long term if the skin is constantly dehydrated. In addition, dry skin can also lead to blemished skin, i.e. pimples and, in the worst case, acne.

  • Take plenty of minerals and vitamins

Vitamins are vital! They control the metabolic processes in our body, influence our water and electrolyte balance, protect us from free radicals and strengthen the immune system. A single vitamin can be involved in over a thousand metabolic processes. In addition to vitamins, we also need minerals such as iron, iodine and zinc as “building blocks” for our body. With the exception of vitamin D, the body cannot produce these itself and so we have to supply them to the body through our diet. A balanced diet supports our body’s functions and therefore also supports healthy skin:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids and biotin, for example, support skin and hair health and also benefit the nails. They are essential as the body does not produce them itself. Linseed oil or walnut oil, for example, should therefore be included in the preparation of meals and salad dressings.
  • We also recommend foods such as watermelon with lots of vitamin C, pomegranate with lots of vitamin C, calcium or magnesium, which have been proven to protect against free radicals and support wound healing.
  • Fresh spinach with lots of beta-carotene and magnesium strengthens the immune system.
  • Berries such as blueberries, blackberries, strawberries or raspberries with valuable antioxidants protect against free radicals that age our skin.

Depending on the time of year, there is a wide variety of fruit and vegetables that provide good support for skin care. What you should avoid, however, is too much salty food, caffeine, sugar or alcohol, as these promote a blemished complexion, among other things. Instead, make sure you eat plenty of silicon, zinc and sulphur. Foods such as cucumbers, radishes and cabbage help to keep your skin young and healthy.

  • Compensation for stress and imbalance

Healthy and smooth skin is also a sign of a healthy organism, so balance out any stress or imbalance. Our body is constantly alternating between tension and relaxation or activity and rest. However, today’s society is changing this natural rhythm, resulting in a constant readiness to perform. But it is the time-outs that make us efficient and focused again. Our skin is a mirror of our soul. Problem skin can be caused by stress or imbalance, but it doesn’t have to be, as there are of course also hereditary diseases. Relaxation exercises and sport are nevertheless a good tip for doing something good for the body, soul and skin. After all, it is well known that anger, worry or tension can exacerbate complaints.

  • And last but not least: What does good or proper skin care actually mean?

Of course, this depends on the individual, but in general it can be said that you should pay attention to the ingredients when choosing skincare: parabens, silicones and mineral oils have no place in cosmetic products. These products do not support the skin, even more so the skin simply does not need these ingredients, and can also trigger skin problems in the case of allergies. Also avoid mixing too many products or active ingredients and do not over-care for your skin: less is more here too! Pay attention to ingredients such as high-quality, nourishing plant-based active ingredients and natural oils. Antioxidants such as vitamin E protect against free radicals, while vitamin C also promotes collagen formation. Shea butter, coconut oil or witch hazel nourish and balance and relax the skin,  while willow bark extracts (from controlled organic cultivation) ensure the gentle and natural removal of superficial skin flakes. For problem skin, care should be taken to choose a skin-neutral cleanser to avoid further stressing the skin.
